Commonplace
Shadyside
What we liked: some unique menu items, quiet work environment, board games, lovely decor
What we didn't like: small menu and relatively expensive
Commonplace is a quiet, chill coffee shop on Penn Ave in Shadyside. The outside is dark and modern while the inside is bright, artsy, and beautiful.
If you need a place to work quietly, this is the spot! Several people were silently working, but there was still plenty of seating (with some big tables too, so good for big groups).
The menu at Commonplace is very limited, with just a few syrups listed and a small specials menu, but they have unique seasonal flavors and house-made syrups you can't get anywhere else. They also have board games for customers to play, a huge plus for us.
Our hot lattes were served in big, tasteful ceramic mugs. We're always looking out for a good mug.

What We Ordered:

Sweet Oak Latte
- One of the most unique lattes we've ever had; earthy, nutty taste that reminded us of a soft pretzel. Really curious flavor - probably not a go-to, but we're glad we tried it!
Ginger Brown Sugar Latte
- Very strong authentic ginger taste, a bit like a gingersnap, but heavy on the spice. We recommend this for ginger lovers, so if you're just a causal spice enjoyer, be warned!
